Check

How to check if Google can index my page

A short public check you can do before Search Console, and what it cannot tell you.

You can check the public signals without an account. Open the URL, then view the page source. Look for a title, one H1, the main sentences, a canonical, and a robots meta tag. Then open /robots.txt and see whether Googlebot is allowed to fetch that path.

IndexDoctor runs the same checks and also requests the URL with a Googlebot user-agent, plus GPTBot and ClaudeBot on the free check. It reports status, redirects, noindex, canonical, sitemap presence, and whether the copy is in the HTML.

That is not the same as Google's index. A public check cannot see whether Google has crawled the URL, which canonical Google chose, or the coverage state in Search Console. Those need the URL Inspection result, which is read-only and optional.

If the public check already shows a block, fix that first. Google will not index a URL the public check can prove is blocked.

What to check

  • Paste the exact URL you want in Google, including https.
  • Read the verdict, then the evidence under each finding.
  • Use the fix prompt in your builder only after you agree the finding is about this URL.

Fix prompt

Example prompt

Check whether Googlebot can index this URL. Report HTTP status, robots.txt, noindex, canonical, sitemap, and whether the main copy is in the server HTML. Do not call an indexing API.

Questions

Does a public check mean the page is in Google?
No. It means the public signals allow indexing. Google still chooses whether to keep the page.
