Server error (5xx)
Server error (5xx)
Google got an error instead of a page. Fix the response, then let the next crawl happen.
5xx means the origin failed: an exception, a timeout, or an upstream that was down. Google retries, then backs off if the host keeps failing.
A page that 500s only for some user-agents is still a server error. Check the app logs for the Googlebot request, not only a browser session.
Return a stable 200 for the URL, with the content in the HTML. There is nothing to submit until that is true.
What to check
- Reproduce the 500 from outside your office network.
- Look at timeouts and errors that happen only for a crawler.
- Keep the sitemap free of URLs that currently 500.
Fix prompt
Example prompt
Google received a 5xx for this URL. Fix the server so the URL returns HTTP 200 and the page content. Do not call an indexing API.
